I think they did a double-blind study. The people on Alli lost, on average, 10% more than the people who didn't take it. These studies usually have an adequate number of people in them, and they throw out the odd result anyway.
If you do a study with 1000 people, and your numbers range between 7% and 12%, with a few coming in at 50%, you don't include the 50% in the study.
